Practice pre-market trading and the open

Updated · By

To practise the pre-market and the open, replay a real past morning from 4:00 a.m. ET, watch the gappers form on a scanner as volume comes in, and trade the 9:30 bell against the same order book traders had. The pre-market is thin and the open is the busiest stretch of the day, so both reward practice on days that really moved.

What is different before 9:30

More on the session itself is on pre-market.

A pre-market run: OLOX on 21 October 2026

OLOX barely traded before 6:24 a.m. Then it went from about 0.76 to 0.93 by 6:30. With a float of 1.42 million shares, its volume since 4:00 a.m. passed the float at 6:38 a.m., twice by 6:54 and three times by 7:01. It crossed 1.00 at 7:12 a.m. and made the high of the day, 1.35, in the 8:00 minute. At 8:36 a.m. buyers took 115,532 shares at 1.18 in 2.7 seconds, through an offer that had peaked at 165,131 shares.

By the bell, 35.32 million shares had traded, 68% of the day's volume to 8:00 p.m. It opened at 1.24, up 67.0%, below its pre-market high, and closed at 0.9971. Most of OLOX's day was over before 9:30. The full day is on the OLOX runner page.

The real Level 2, time and sales and chart for OLOX from 7:06 a.m. to 7:18 a.m. ET on 21 October 2026, from the same feed the replay plays, as it nears 1.00 in the pre-market. It stops at 7:09 a.m. and asks what you would do, then plays on.

An open that went the other way: POM on 21 October 2026

POM was halted from 3:04 a.m. and first traded at 3.55 at 9:00 a.m., against a previous close of 1.99. The slide began the next minute. It opened at 0.9501 at 9:30, down 52.4%, and was at 0.69 by its first LULD pause at 9:35. Only 878,638 shares traded before the open. The pre-market price was set on little volume and did not hold. The day is on the POM runner page.

How to practise the morning

  1. Start early. Open the day at 4:00 a.m., or at the time you would really sit down, and run a gappers or low-float scan.
  2. Build a watchlist before the bell. Note the float, the news and the relative volume of each name, the way you would on a live morning.
  3. Plan the open. Decide what you would do if a stock opens above or below its pre-market high, before it does.
  4. Slow down at the bell. Run the minutes around 9:30 at half speed, then speed through the quiet stretch after.
  5. Review and repeat. Go back to 9:25 and take the open again until the decision is quick.

A replay can start at 4:00 a.m., at 9:30, or at any time you type, up to 7:59 p.m. ET, and runs from half speed to ten times speed. See gap and go for the classic morning setup.

Common questions

Can you practice pre-market trading?
Yes, on a replay that includes the pre-market. Hindsight Markets replays a real past day from 4:00 a.m. ET with the full order book, so pre-market trades fill against the shares that were really there.
What time does pre-market trading start?
The replay's pre-market starts at 4:00 a.m. ET and runs to the 9:30 a.m. open. When your own broker lets you trade before the bell depends on the broker.
Are there LULD halts in the pre-market?
No. LULD bands run only from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET. Other halts can happen before the open: POM was halted from 3:04 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on 21 October 2026.
Does the pre-market predict the open?
Not reliably. On 21 October 2026 OLOX opened below its pre-market high and POM opened at less than a third of its first pre-market trade.
Why isn't my pre-market order filling?
Either it is not set to work outside the regular session, or the book is thin and nobody traded at your price. And like any limit order, it waits behind the orders at its price that came first.
